Blood Pressure System Leadership Board

High blood pressure affects more than 1 in 4 adults and is the second biggest risk factor for premature death and disability in this country. There are an estimated 5 million adults in England with undiagnosed high blood pressure.  It is a major risk factor for conditions including stroke, heart attack, heart failure, chronic kidney disease and dementia.

Of every 10 people with high blood pressure, 4 are undiagnosed, and a further 2 on treatment have not reduced their blood pressure enough to be controlled. Blood pressure control has improved considerably in the last decade, but England still lags behind others (for example, the USA and Canada).

PHE initiated a programme of work on high blood pressure in 2014. This sits within the NHS Health Check team at PHE, and we are excited to host this work within the national team given the many shared objectives and connections.

Since there is room for major improvement across the blood pressure pathway, we have taken the approach of convening a cross-sector Blood Pressure System Leadership Board to ensure shared ownership of this issue and oversee a programme of work to improve the prevention, detection and management of high blood pressure. Minutes from the latest Board meetings are available on the right.
